Elementary Core Curriculum: Burney Elementary wants to push the boundaries of TK - 6th Grade education by harnessing the power of high impact actions and strategies to advance learning and teaching. Your Jr. Raiders will be expected to engage in reading, writing, discussing, critical thinking, problem solving and hands-on learning. The vast majority of learning occurs in the classroom with the teacher and classmates. Students will collaborate, communicate, think, experiment, and reflect throughout each day. Our commitment to hands-on, tactile, kinesthetic future based learning develops students’ critical thinking, problem solving, motivation, communication and cooperation.

We will create, celebrate and innovate because our children deserve the very best.

English Language Arts: In elementary school, teachers focus on developing strong foundational literacy skills by implementing a combination of whole class and small group instruction in a structured literacy model that teaches decoding, language comprehension, and reading comprehension.

Learners engage with complex, rigorous, and diverse texts designed to broaden their knowledge of the world and develop the critical thinking and analytical reading comprehension skills necessary to become deep thinkers and avid readers.

Writing instruction in the elementary grades includes text-based responses, writing to learn, and creative writing. Students practice writing in various formats and for different purposes, fostering their ability to articulate ideas clearly and effectively.

Math: The math curriculum is designed to build deeper levels of conceptual understanding through open-ended problem-solving tasks that link mathematics to everyday situations. Hands-on activities and mathematical exploration are included to provide the practice necessary to develop arithmetic skills.

Science: Science at BES is not merely a subject; it is an immersive experience. Our teachers integrate subject matter across curricula with project-based learning that makes science come alive. Fun, engaging hands-on projects form the basis for our science education approach.

Social Studies: Elementary students gain cultural knowledge and understanding through the BES history/social studies curriculum. They also learn about democracy and civic values from both a local and global perspective. Using both a textbook and project-based learning, learners engage in activities that ensure their understanding of the interconnectedness of communities and their environments.

Visual & Performing Arts: Visual and Performing Arts are integrated into all grades fulfilling our school's vision to build innovative educational programs that enrich the academic experience and inspire the individual student. "Creative Sparks" is our cutting edge arts instruction that integrates visual arts, STEAM, music, coding, drama and dance.

Physical Education: All learners participate in an equitable and inclusive Physical Education (P.E.) curriculum that emphasizes the five components of health-related fitness: Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiovascular Endurance, Body Composition and Flexibility.

1:1 Technology Program: Burney Elementary School is committed to providing equitable access to technology for its students. As part of this initiative, the school has implemented a 1:1 Chromebook program, ensuring that each student has their own device for educational purposes. This program allows students to engage with digital learning tools, complete assignments, and access online resources, both in the classroom and at home. By integrating technology into the learning experience, Burney Elementary aims to enhance student engagement and prepare them for success in a digital world.

Native Education: We are dedicated to honoring and integrating Native American culture into our school. The school employs a full-time Native Education paraprofessional who provides dedicated support to Native students and families. On Fridays, the school hosts Talking Circles—an Indigenous practice rooted in equality and deep listening—where students and staff gather to share experiences, reflect on personal growth, and discuss topics of importance. These circles foster a sense of community, respect, and emotional well-being, aligning with the school's commitment to holistic education and cultural inclusivity.

Special Education: Push-in and pull-out services are available to students with IEPs.

Second Language Learners: For English Learners, BES offers integrated and designated programming to build communication skills including speaking & listening.
